No! I’m inputting the data right in the sheet :-/

I’m using 10 pips from the X point, and it really overperformed for EURUSD compared to the fib. This could depend on the pair though :-/

    • Probably because of the smaller losses. There’s a good book called Trade What You See. Author uses a similar stop. Almost done testing 4hr EURUSD bats. So far expectancy/profit factor at 1/1.2 for the 1.13 fib and 3/1.5 for 1.27 fib stop. Could be a good one to test next for your fixed pip.

How do you get the Money Management part to work? Mine has never actually calculated, and I have the latest up-to-date Excel and what not.

I just finished EURUSD on the 4-hour (FINALLY) and I got an expectancy of 3 with a profit factor of 2.1 going back to 2015. I reenter (based on my “broken pattern strategy” rules) and used the fixed pip SL. I…[Read more]

Yeah, that’s what I figured! How far are you going? I was going back to 2010 on the 4-hour, but I’m thinking of doing a first round from 2015, since that gives me the same amount of bars as going back to 2000 with the Daily.

    • When I started back testing 2019 was the last full year I had so I’ve been doing 2010-2019. Now I’m debating for future pairs doing 2010-2020, 2011-2020, or just roll with 2010-2019. Trying to keep the years consistent to compare data but also want the most recent data.

When you mess around with the stops and targets, how exactly do you do that? Is there an “automated” way? Or, while backtesting, you fiddle with both manually?

  • Mona Sutherland posted a new activity comment 2 months ago

    Hello!

For me, it has really depended on the pair. Some are great and others are trash. I was testing the Daily, but I’ve moved on to the 4-hour as the frequency is really low on the Daily and I’m not sure patterns are the best for that timeframe.

I’ll let you know how the testing gets on!

    • Tested about 15 different pairs on the 4HR with 1.13 stops and conventional targets. All came in under those numbers. Mostly around 1/1.3. AUDCAD gartley with targets at .382/.618/A got me an expectancy of 3 and profit 1.8. Also had good results on EURNZD with a 1.27 stop and conv. targets. Expectancy of 4 and profit factor of 1.8. Had to mess…[Read more]

Also, I started tracking structure, psych numbers, amount of bars between legs, RSI, etc., while testing my first pairs. I didn’t see it made much difference. However, now I do keep the EMAs on my chart since I’m noticing that if a Cypher is going bearish in a bullish trend, that doesn’t really work. I don’t have clear data yet… It’s something I…[Read more]

    • Nice Mona thanks for the info, I just started testing patterns in the 4H time, I would like to add some filters specially structure to my targets but I’m dealing with the issue that ATR is big in 4H so I dont have room to do much and a lot of times
      I can’t enter the trade if I want a 1/1 rr

Hi Julio! I’m doing the Cypher on the Daily and have done the following so far:

    EURUSD
    GBPJPY
    GBPUSD
    NZDUSD
    USDJPY

–> These were profitable for me and I will trade.

    I also tested:

    AUDCAD
    AUDUSD
    EURJPY
    USDCAD

–> These were not profitable. In the case of the AUDCAD, I think it could be profitable to do the opposite of what the Cypher says,…[Read more]

    • Hey Mona, thanks for the info. I’ve been testing .618 as target one and a retest of the highs for target two on the four hour charts with a 1 ATR stop. Would love to exchange data with anyone who is testing something similar to avoid testing as many unprofitable pairs as possible. So far these are the profitable pairs I’ve come across if you’re…[Read more]

Hello! I’m backtesting the Cypher on the Daily and have so far done EURUSD, GBPUSD, NZDUSD, USDJPY and am currently on EURJPY. All have done okay except for EURJPY. I may try to tweak my reentry method, but it’s looking pretty dismal.

I did backtest the EURUSD on the 4-hour starting in January 2015. I got 83 trades, a profit factor of 1.6, an…[Read more]

    • Hi Mona, I found only 29 trades on EURUSD on the 4-hour. I started in April 2011. Maybe i am not seeing all the patterns that are there? I am going to ask the wider group so we can start seeing what others are getting. I am wary of trying to make direct comparisons, but I think for me, some other insights might be useful for me.

      Keep an eye out…[Read more]

    Hi again!

Question… What timeframe do you trade? I backtested the Cypher on the EURUSD and NZDUSD on the Daily and SO many A-B were just 1 candle or the very next candle… I actually tracked it… For the EURUSD, of the 46 trades I recorded from 2000 to now, just 4 had 2 or more candles between A-B.

Also, how did you decide on the 2 candle…[Read more]

Thanks Nicky! Is there a setting to implement that? I checked properties on MT5 and am not seeing something similar.

    Hi Pattern Traders!

Does anyone use a rule for max number of bars between any 2 consecutive points? Especially for backtesting?

I’ve just backtested the Cypher on the Daily (with the help of Enigma) for NZDUSD, and I’ve made a rule to not use if they take more than 60 bars to complete.

I’m starting on the EURUSD and there are some enormous…[Read more]

    • Hey Mona, i have a rule that i do not have more that 250 candles on my chart whilst testing, so if the whole pattern is more than that its invalid. i also have a 2 candle or more rule for my X-A & A-B. Hope that helps

    • Hey Mona, I am testing the 240 at the moment. The reason i came up with that rule is because i dont see a single candle as a impulse/anchor leg, so if i came up with that rule i then i can back test consistently with what i need to identify as a leg. The B leg rule may also get scrapped (too early to know yet) as i do see spikes up to the 382 fib…[Read more]

    • Hi, Im using 30bar rule for the whole pattern, I have seen when it is greater than 80/90 it gives better entry and then only look for reaction till same width of the pattern.

  • Hi all! Is it just me, or are there very very few entires on the USDJPY? I started in 2014 and found very few. If there are more than that, please let me know as I’ve been doing something wrong.

    • Hi Mona, I also found few entries on the USDJPY especially between 2014 thru 2017, but overall USDJPY was not a profitable pair for me in Daily Chore.

    • Hi Mona, I didn’t test the USDJPY using the standard rules. by the time i got to that pair i was testing a modified Daily Chore strategy. I would say though, if you check the rules you are using against what is in the Daily Chore training video and you have got those rules near you when you are on the charts, you should be okay. Do you have the…[Read more]
